Where is Your Water Shut Off Valve?

Uncontrolled water leaks in your home are a hazard, so if you ever find yourself in a situation with a water leak or a burst pipe, it's essential to know your house’s primary water shut-off valve, along with the individual shut off valves throughout your home.

How to Find Your Main Water Shut Off Valve

  • Check the inside perimeter of your home: If your shut off valve is located on the inside of your home, then it will typically be somewhere along the perimeter because that is where water first enters the house. It will also likely be located on the side of your home facing the street.
  • Find the streetside shut off valve outside: If you do not find the shut-off valve inside your home, the main shut-off valve may be located at the beginning of your property, bordering the sidewalk. If this is the case, contact the water company before turning off any valves. They may instruct you on how to do it or dispatch a team to do it for you.
  • Find the shut off valve location on your property inspection report: If you have tried both of these methods and still cannot find the water shut off valve for your property, then look for your property inspection report. The plumbing section of your report should be the location of your main water shut-off valve.

How to Turn Off Your Water Shut Off Valve

Most shut-off valves merely require turning the valve clockwise as far as it goes to shut off the water and then turning the valve counterclockwise to turn your water back on.

How to Turn Off Water Close to the Source

If you only need to shut off the water to specific areas of your home, look for valves close to the source. For example, the shut off valve for your toilet should be located on the wall behind your toilet. These shut-off valves work the same as your main water shut-off valve.
