Rust Stains in Your Toilet Bowl

An Ultimate Guide to Remove Them and Prevent Them

The presence of rust stains on your toilet bowl makes your home look like it's in constant disrepair, regardless of how often you scrub it. Not only is the reddish-brown stain unsightly, but it is also extremely stubborn. You cannot remove the stain by simply cleaning it with regular cleaners.

A few methods exist for removing rust stains. We'll take a look at those and how to prevent rust.

What causes your toilet bowl to rust?

Porcelain toilets can rust for a variety of reasons. A large amount of iron in your water can cause stains in your toilet bowl.

A water filtration system and softener are the best way to prevent rust stains from returning. Otherwise, you'll have to scrub them away all the time. The stains are from your hard water, and the best way to prevent them is to fix the hard water issue.

Tips to remove rust stains from the toilet bowl

The following methods can be used to remove rust stains from your porcelain throne according to the location of the stains:

  • Vinegar and lemon juice - Vinegar, lemon juice, and soda are the best ingredients for removing rust from toilet bowls. Fill the toilet bowl with two cups of basic white vinegar and let it sit overnight. Use vinegar to remove stains above the water line.

The method works on stains above the water line, but it's primarily for rusty rings. Then apply lemon juice and baking soda paste above the water line. After an hour, scrub the stains away.

  • Coca-Cola - Besides eroding your teeth, everyone's favorite acidic, sugary drink also eats away at rust. Shut off the water to the toilet, fill the bowl with Coca-Cola, and leave overnight. Turn on the water supply when you wake up and flush the toilet. You can scrub away the rust with a toilet brush or at least break it up enough to scrub it away.
  • Stones of pumice - Natural volcanic stone pumice can be used safely (barehanded) on porcelain. Rub it on the rust stains if one of the above methods does not work.

There are cleaning products that can be used to remove rust and are safe for your toilet. These products are formulated to remove rust with ease.

Tips to Prevent Rust Stains in Your Toilet Bowl

Keeping your bath's surfaces free of rust stains is the best way to prevent them in the future. Follow these tips to do so;

  • Clean Regularly - The daily cleaning of your bathroom will prevent the build-up of iron and other deposits.
  • Dry the Surfaces - When possible, always take a minute to dry the surfaces that water has gotten onto. This will help prevent rust stains from getting on other surfaces.
  • Remove cans that could leave rings -If you have air fresheners or other cans with metal bottoms, you should store them away from water. When left around water, it can cause rust rings to form on surfaces. Store them inside the cabinets to avoid this.
  • Install an Iron Filter: By removing iron and other minerals from water, a water purification system or iron filters will eliminate the problem at its source.
  • Use Water Softener: There are even some softeners that are specifically designed to combat rust.
