How to Fix a Running Toilet

If you notice your toilet is running longer than it should, you may need a quick and easy repair. Constant water flow is not only annoying but also a big water waster. Fixing a running toilet may be easier than it sounds with these helpful steps!

Steps to Follow to Fix a Running Toilet

  1. Turn off your water: To avoid any messes or wasted water, the best thing to do when inspecting a running toilet is to turn off the water supply to the toilet. To do this, there is usually a small valve on the wall next to the toilet. Turn the value all the way clockwise to turn off the water supply, and then counterclockwise to turn the water back on when you're ready.
  2. Remove your toilet’s tank lid: Be careful when removing your toilet’s tank lid because you don’t want to break anything inadvertently. Ensure you know where to set the lid before lifting it to avoid mistakes.
  3. Check the flapper: Many running toilet issues are caused by faulty flappers. The flapper is the rubber or silicone seal around the drain that lifts every time you flush the toilet. If there is incorrect sealing, the water continually leaks down the drain.

Press your finger on the edge of the flapper, and the water stops running after a couple of seconds; then, there is your issue! From here, you can record your toilet brand and google replacement parts for the flapper.

4. Check the fill valve: Dirt and mineral deposits can sometimes cause the fill valve to malfunction, and one of the fixes for this is to flush the system by pouring water through the fill valve or replacing the valve altogether.

5. Turn on your water: After doing any sort of repair, make sure to turn back on the water to your toilet.
