Alternatives to Chemical Drain Cleaners

If you've ever dealt with a clogged drain, you know that it can be very stressful. You might not think to look elsewhere for help, but there are alternatives to chemical drain cleaners that will clear your clogs while being safer and less expensive. There is a reason why chemical drain cleaners have been used for decades: they are effective. While there are many ways to unclog clogged drains, many people opt for this over-the-counter product because it is fast and effective. However, there are several reasons why you should avoid chemical drain cleaners, if possible. High-Speed Plumbing has some alternatives to try before you resort to calling an emergency plumber.

Why Should You Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners?

They can damage your pipes and septic systems over time. The acids in these products can react with the metal of your pipes to create a layer of scale that can clog them over time.

They're bad for the environment. These chemicals can harm fish when they run into rivers and lakes or leach into groundwater from improperly installed septic systems. In addition, when these chemicals get into our water systems, they can harm wildlife and contaminate drinking water supplies.

They're bad for you! Some of these chemicals are highly corrosive and can cause burns if you spill them on yourself or get any on your skin or eyes (even if you wash them off immediately). They also release toxic fumes that may irritate your lungs if you breathe them while working with them.

How Should You Unclog Drains?

A clogged drain is inconvenient but can also be a health hazard. Not only does the clog prevent water flow through your pipes, but it also leaves behind a big mess. If you’re dealing with stubborn clogs in your drains, here are some alternatives to chemical drain cleaners.

Drain Snake

A drain snake is a long flexible wire you push into your drain to clear any obstructions. It works by grabbing onto the clog and pulling it out so that water can flow freely again. The benefit of this method is that it doesn’t require any chemicals or tools other than the snake itself, which means there’s no risk of damage to your pipes or septic system. However, these tools can be expensive, and they can’t always reach deep enough into your pipes to remove everything from the bottom up.

Plunger

Drains are usually clogged because of grease, hair, or other organic material. This type of material can be removed using a plunger, which is available at most hardware stores. To use a plunger correctly, place it over the drain opening and push it down until all air bubbles have been pushed out. Then release the pressure gently so as not to create more suction than needed. Repeat this process until the drain opens up completely, pulling out any dirt or debris that may have accumulated inside it.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are a combination that has been used for decades to unclog drains. The combination can be poured down the drain, followed by boiling water. The boiling water will cause the baking soda and vinegar mixture to foam up, which will help loosen the buildup in the pipe. This method works best when you have an open drain where you can pour the mixture directly into it. It also helps if you have a garbage disposal since this will allow you to flush out any remaining residue in your pipes easily.
