How To Remove the Bathroom Sink Stopper: An Ultimate Guide

Almost everyone has experienced a clogged sink. Initially, the water drains slowly, but it takes even longer after a while - and sometimes, it doesn't drain at all.

Your only option if this happens is to remove the bathroom sink stopper to get at the clog. The good news is this is a simple job that anyone can do with a few simple tools. Alternatively, you can hire a plumbing company if you need help. High-Speed Plumbing is one of the best options to consider.

Step-by-Step Guide to Remove the Bathroom Sink Stopper

You need a few essential items before you remove the bathroom sink stopper. Here are the supplies you'll need.

  • Wrench or pliers
  • Brush
  • Regular detergent
  • Vinegar
  • Bucket
  • Hair clog removal tool
  • Drain cleaner liquid
  • Flashlight

After getting all the tools you need, here's a step-by-step guide to removing bathroom sink stoppers.

1. Hand remove the bathroom sink stopper if you can

You can remove some stoppers by hand without any special tools or techniques. Turn the stopper by lifting it and turning it. You may only need to do this to remove it.

2. Take everything out of under the sink.

You'll need to remove everything below the sink if the stopper doesn't come out so that you are left with enough space to work.

3. Find the horizontal plunger rod.

Using your flashlight, look under the sink. The stopper is connected to the strap via a horizontal rod. It is usually pretty easy to identify - a rod attached to a strap with holes.

4. Find The Metal Clip

A small metal clip secures the rod and the metal strap it is attached to when you find them together. The rod and strap can now be separated by removing this clip. Place the clip safely in a place where you won't lose it.

5. Remove the pivot nut.

It is now necessary to unscrew the pivot nut attached to the other end of the rod you just detached from the strap. During this process, place a bucket under the sink to catch any water leaking.

6. Take off the Stopper

Hopefully, the stopper is free, allowing you to easily remove it from the sink. Use the detergent, vinegar, and warm water to soak it before putting it back.

7. Remove Hair with The Hair Remover

If there is any hair or gunk in the hole, pull it out by using a hair remover tool before replacing the stopper.

8. Clean the Drain Pipe

If the drain pipe was previously blocked, you should thoroughly clean it before reinstalling the plug. If water flows away quickly, your blocked drain has been unclogged.

9. Place Everything Back

You need to reverse the steps once you have cleaned everything up and unblocked the drain, so follow them the same way again.

Reinstall the sink stopper first. Using the wrench or pliers, tighten the nut again under the sink. Reattach the rod to the strap using the clip you removed earlier once the nut is tightened. Test the stopper after this is done.

Push and pull the level until it moves up and down usually. Put everything back under the sink, wipe everything down, and you're done!

Completing the Sink Stopper Removal Process

This guide should help to remove the bathroom sink stopper without any issues. Alternatively, you can hire a plumbing service if you find it challenging to do it by yourself. We understand that pulling out hair and gunk from a drain isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea.

When looking to hire professionals, consider High-Speed Plumbing. We are the fastest and most affordable plumbing service in the area.
