Following These 5 Simple Tips Can Help You Reduce Your Water Usage

Whether you are looking for ways to reduce water usage because you want to respect the environment or you want to keep your utility bills down – or both – at High Speed Plumbing we have some ideas that can help you reduce not just your water usage at home but your overall water usage. 1. Wash Your Car at a Car Wash
  2. This one often surprises people but the truth is that if you wash your car at home with an average garden hose, you are going to be using about ten gallons of water each minute. That means that if you take just ten minutes to wash your car, you could be using up to 100 gallons of water. On the other hand, a power washer at a car wash uses half the amount of water. Additionally, car washes are required by law to follow recirculation and water conservation regulations.

  3. Use Your Dishwasher Instead of Washing Dishes by Hand
  4. Can you guess how many dishwasher loads the average United States household has in a year? About 215. If you wash them by hand, you will be using an average of 27 gallons of water to clean a single dishwasher load. On the other hand, an Energy Star rated dishwasher uses just five gallons of water each load.

  5. Look for Leaks in Your Home
  6. When you think of reducing the water used in your home, don’t just think of the water you are actively using – think of the water that is being wasted through leaks too. Leaks within the home can waste as much as one trillion gallons of water throughout the country. You may have leaks coming from your toilet, faucet, or other leaky valves. Repairing leaks could reduce your water bill by as much as 10%.

  7. Install Water-Saving Showerheads
  8. According to EPA estimates, the average traditional showerhead uses about 2 ½ gallons of water per minute. You can use half that with a WaterSense labeled option – and without a loss in performance or flow.

  9. Have Your Hot Water Heater Serviced
  10. Of course you want a hot water, but you do not need to spend money heating water that you are not using. If you find that you are standing there, waiting several minutes for the water to heat up, then it is likely time to call on High Speed Plumbing for help with your water heater. We can service it and make any necessary repairs to help it work more efficiently.
