How To Remove Toilet Rust Stains

Toilet rust stains aren’t uncommon, but they are annoying. They make your bathroom look dirty even when it’s clean. So we’re here to help with some DIY ways to clean and prevent toilet rust stains. When you try any of these, remember to wear gloves to protect the skin on your hands.

Use Distilled Vinegar for Toilet Rust Stains

Vinegar is a super common ingredient in DIY cleaning products. This is because the acidity in vinegar has the unique property of sanitizing and cleaning without all of those harsh chemicals.

Vinegar can be used weekly for cleaning rusty toilet bowls, and eventually, the rust should reduce and not form again. For older, more severe stains, let the vinegar sit in your toilet bowl for a couple of hours before scrubbing. After scrubbing with vinegar, flush the toilet a couple of times to reduce any residue.

Citrus on Toilet Rust Stains

Anything with citric acid can be super beneficial in removing rust stains, for example, lime juice, lemon juice, or plain powdered citric acid. Simply pour your chosen citrus into the toilet and use a gentle abrasive like baking soda or salt to scrub the citrus in with a toothbrush.

For heavily stained areas, create a paste with baking soda and the citrus and let it sit for at least an hour before scrubbing.

With a little bit of elbow grease, the stain should begin to lift!

Gentle Abrasives on Toilet Rust Stains

As mentioned before, you can use gentle abrasives like salt or baking soda to scrub the stains away, with or without added cleaners. These are gentle enough not to damage your toilet bowl in the process.

Buy a rust remover from the store.

If you’re not afraid of using some chemicals, there are store-bought rust removers that you can find at most major grocery stores. These will be a little harsher, but if you’ve tried every other DIY method and the rust stains are still there, these may be worth a try.

How to prevent rust stains from forming

  • Install a filtration system to eliminate hard water that causes rust stains. This can also be beneficial for mineral build-ups in your shower or other parts of your home.
  • Regularly clean your toilet to avoid any build-up of stains.
  • Fix plumbing leaks as soon as you suspect them. If you notice anything weird about how your toilet is draining, call a plumbing professional at High Speed Plumbing to fix it!
