There Are Many Options for Removing Rust Stains from Metal
Getting rid of rust stains from metal is easier than you may think. In fact, there are a number of methods, any one of which may work for you. First, try white vinegar. It reacts with the rust and essentially dissolves it right off of metal. Take your fixture and soak it in vinegar for a few hours. Once it has soaked, you should be able to wipe off most of the rust.
You can also try baking soda and water. For this option, create a paste out of the baking soda and water. It should be thick enough that you can spread it. Once it is spread, let it stay until it’s dry. Then scrape it off with a brush and rinse it off with water. Your metal fixture should now be rust-free.
The fastest option is also the hardest: Using a little bit of elbow grease. Take steel wool, or another abrasive tool like a pumice stone, and scrub the rust off of the plumbing fixture. In addition to the physical labor this requires, the other downside is that it can cause scratching on your plumbing fixture.
Removing Rust Stains from Porcelain
One of the most common places to find rust stains is in your bathtub and many bathtubs are made from porcelain. If you are dealing with this issue, the first thing you should do is get a pumice bar or stick. Wet it down using the tap. Once it is completely saturated, rub it hard back and forth on the stain. This will develop a pumice paste. When you have enough of it, let it sit and soak in for ten minutes before rinsing the paste away. Repeat if the stain isn’t completely gone.
Another option is to create a paste made from one part borax and one part lemon juice. Rub this paste into the stain, let it dry, and then rinse it. Once again, you can repeat this process if the stain is not entirely gone.
